Ssese Islands is a collection of 84 forested islands scattered within the waters of Lake Victoria mostly to the its northern shores. Apart from a few of them, many of the islands remain unoccupied except for the variety of wildlife including birds, insects, reptiles and other mammals.

A particular group of people, the Basese which is a distinct tribal group with its own language and culture inhabit part of Ssese Islands. Their main occupation is fishing and cultivating (coffee, sweet potato, cassava, yams and bananas). They are very interesting an worth a visit.

Animals found here include chimps, hippos and crocodiles, waterbuck, vervet and colobus monkeys and the elusive sitatunga (an antelope that lives in swamp areas; characterized by long, wide-splayed hooves and is particularly adapted to walking on marshy ground).

The Ssese Islands are also inhabited by a variety of species of birds including parrots, touraco, flycatcher, whale-headed Stork, many geese and herons, fish eagles, weavers and kingfishers as wells as an abundant population of butterflies. The island shores are characterized by white sand beaches and several fishermen that make this area a lively place to be.

The location of Pearl Beach Gardens on Buggala Island provides an ideal base from which to enjoy the attractions of the Ssese Islands and the rest of the Pearl of Africa (Uganda) in general.
