| Ssese Islands is a collection of 84 forested islands
scattered within the waters of Lake Victoria mostly to
the its northern shores. Apart from a few of them, many
of the islands remain unoccupied except for the variety
of wildlife including birds, insects, reptiles and other
mammals. |
A particular group of people, the Basese which is
a distinct tribal group with its own language and
culture inhabit part of Ssese Islands. Their main
occupation is fishing and cultivating (coffee, sweet
potato, cassava, yams and bananas). They are very
interesting an worth a visit.
Animals found here include chimps, hippos and crocodiles,
waterbuck, vervet and colobus monkeys and the elusive
sitatunga (an antelope that lives in swamp areas;
characterized by long, wide-splayed hooves and is
particularly adapted to walking on marshy ground).
The Ssese Islands are also inhabited by a variety
of species of birds including parrots, touraco,
flycatcher, whale-headed Stork, many geese and herons,
fish eagles, weavers and kingfishers as wells as
an abundant population of butterflies. The island
shores are characterized by white sand beaches and
several fishermen that make this area a lively place
to be.
The location of Pearl Beach Gardens on Buggala Island
provides an ideal base from which to enjoy the attractions
of the Ssese Islands and the rest of the Pearl of
Africa (Uganda) in general.
